Daniel Patrick Jankowski beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, peacefully left this earth in the comfort of his own home and started his next journey on the evening of February 28th, 2017. One of five, born in Toledo, he was the first-born child of Frances and Daniel Jankowski . His father Daniel Jankowski, mother Frances (Wojtowicz) Jankowski, brothers Mark Jankowski and Jack Jankowski, and much loved sister Linda Jankowski-Rabbitt predeceased him in death. Dan’s medical and firefighting career spanned 32 years and he respected every aspect of the job. In September of 1974 he was hired as a paramedic for the City of Maumee. Five years later he was promoted to Assistant EMS Chief. In 1988 he became a firefighter and in 1990 he was assigned to Heavy Rescue. To say he loved this part of the job is an understatement; his arm bore the Heavy Rescue insignia. Before he retired in 2005 due to illness he was promoted to Lieutenant of Heavy rescue. Dan was also a Continuing Education Instructor, a Fire Safety Inspector, and an Arson Investigator. He touched many lives during his career and we have enjoyed hearing the memories. On March 17th, 1972 he married the love of his life, his best friend, Karen Ann Lennex. Many of you have had the pleasure of seeing their extremely velvet, hairy, and colorful wedding photos (Dan did go to Woodstock after all). They spent many happy years vacationing with friends and celebrating holidays with their large families. As a father he supported his daughters in their various artistic pursuits providing them with numerous lessons and always enthusiastically attending their performances. During our childhood when the weather was cold he could be found wearing one of his numerous L. L. Bean chamois shirts with his North Face vest hiking the towpath with his family. During one particularly snowy winter he created a house with walls and a door entirely out of snow. Many happy mornings were spent at Side Cut Park (breakfast at the park) cooking a feast of sausage, scrambled eggs, and grilled toast. It is not enough to say Dan was a devoted grandfather. He loved his first grandchild Anna to the moon and back. Nine years after her his grandson Miles was born who he said gave the best fireman hugs. He is survived by his adored wife of 45 years Karen who was also his caregiver, daughters Melanie (Eric Oblander- he was his son-in-law’s biggest fan) and Tiffany, gorgeous and funny grandchildren Anna Jankowski and Miles Oblander, his baby sister who he respected and was so proud of the Honorable Judge Michelle (David) Wagner, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom he thought were smart and attractive (even the Michigan fans). The last ten years were not without their difficulties yet many comforting memories were created. Numerous people are to be thanked for their continuous support that came in many forms. In particular we would like to thank the Maumee Fire and EMS Department, family, friends, neighbors, and the entire Maumee community for their varied support during the last decade. We would have never made it through without all of you. Visitation will be held from 1-8 pm on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio with the Maumee Fire Department to hold a service at 7pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 104 W. Broadway, Maumee, Ohio. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Maumee, Ohio. The family suggests donations be made to the City of Maumee Fire and EMS Department. Online condolences may be given at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com During this difficult time we feel loved; we feel lifted. Dan would want you to pour yourself a Manhattan and head on out to the porch to tell great stories and talk sports. We encourage you to do just that. Go Yankees!
