Daniel Thomas Bolovan, Md.

October 26, 1931 — March 18, 2023

Daniel Thomas Bolovan, MD., of Fremont, Indiana, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2023, in Sylvania, Ohio. He was born on October 26, 1931, in Warren, Ohio, where he attended Warren G. Harding high school and graduated in 1948.


Upon graduating from high school, Daniel furthered his education by attending Ohio Northern University where he earned his way through college by working the hot strip in the summers at Republic Steel in Warren, OH where his father was a foreman. While at college, he enjoyed his love of tennis where he was a member of the men’s tennis team. He graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. From there, he pursued his dream of medicine at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine and graduated in 1958.


Daniel went on to intern at St. Mary’s Hospital in Cincinnati OH from 1958-1959. Following his internship, he completed his residency from 1958 – 1959 in radiology at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami Florida where trained under Manuel Viamante who was one of the pioneers in the field of angiography. His residency included General Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy. He was board certified in Internal Medicine, Pathology and Radiology.


Dr. Bolovan moved to Toledo, Ohio where he joined X Ray Associates, practicing at St. Luke’s and Mercy Hospitals and served as chairman of St. Luke’s radiology department for 14 years. In 1988, Dr. Bolovan introduced the first nuclear stress study using the SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) system gamma camera and computer a St. Luke’s Hospital, which was the first SPECT system in Northwest Ohio. Utilization of the element Thallium enabled radiologists to view more detailed anatomical images and early detection of disease, including coronary artery disease in advance of myocardial ischemia. Dr. Bolovan promoted the subsequent purchases of CT and MRI Imaging Unit installations at St. Luke’s Hospital. Dr. Bolovan specialized in musculoskeletal exams utilizing MRI procedures. Prior to advent of the lithotripsy procedure, Dr. Bolovan and Urologist Dr. Gerold Cichochi performed Percutaneous Nephrostomy surgeries, during which an inserted guide wire was used to retrieve renal calculi. He continued to pursued new advances in nuclear Medicine throughout his career.


Dr. Bolovan was a member and past president of the Northwest Ohio Radiological Society, as well as a member of the Ohio State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County, the Radiological Society of North America, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and the National and Central Chapters of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.


Dr. Bolovan and his wife were among the founding members of the Toledo Modern Art Club. Two of his major interests were modern art and U.S. and world history, which came to life for him during several trips abroad with his wife to the Far East and Europe. Dr. Bolovan was a member of the Torch Club of Toledo, the English Speaking Union, the Toledo Athletic Club, and the Inverness Country Club.


His love of history transcended in 1980 when Dr. Bolovan and his wife purchased an 18th century farm on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, which they restored over a period of 10 years. The farm was added to the National Historic Properties and Virginia Landmarks Registers. Dr. Bolovan found a second career in landscaping the grounds of the Eastern Shore historic farm. He was also a member of the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club and the Science and Philosophy Seminar Series of the Eastern Shore Community College.


He was a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, and son. He was a gentle and empathetic man who emulated real humility to all those who encountered him.


Dr. Bolovan is preceded in death by his father, Thomas Bolovan, and mother, Senia Bolovan; sister, Olympia Bolovan Stoia; brother, Emil Bolovan; daughter, Cynthia Ann Bolovan Fritz PhD (Daniel); stepson, Thomas Perry; and first wife, Bridget McHale Bolovan.


Dr. Bolovan is survived by his second wife of 50 years, Mary Elizabeth Carolyn Bolovan; stepdaughter, Elizabeth Kathryn Perry Matranga (Theodore); stepson, David Taylor Perry (Jodi); daughter, Karen Bolovan Valentine (Edward); daughter, Margaret Bolovan PhD; and daughter, Katherine Danielle Bolovan RN; step grandson, David Matranga (Katia); step grandson, John Matranga; granddaughter, Katherine Valentine (Uriel Guadarrama); grandson, Peter Valentine; and nephew, Kenneth Stoia.
