Cynthia L. “Cyndie” (Whitner) Curtis, 58, of Bowling Green, Ohio died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, November 20, 2016. Cyndie was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 15, 1958 to Phillip A. and Judith (Crane) Whitner, and graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1976, where she played tennis, volleyball, and basketball, wrote for the school paper, and edited the school literary magazine. Cyndie always knew she wanted to be a teacher, and received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Toledo in 1991 while she was raising three boys. Cyndie taught language arts at Rossford Junior High for 20 years, where she was a wrestlerette advisor, helped found the Junior Teen Institute, and always made sure the Rossford Bulldogs had a good meal in their belly the night before a high school football game. Cyndie was also an avid gardener, reader, poet, garage saler, and Buckeye fan. Cyndie was friends with everybody, and she made a lifetime of good memories with her family and friends in the communities of Perrysburg, Rossford, and Bowling Green, her co-workers in the Rossford Public School System, Rossford Eagles Aerie No 2322, Alabama, at the family cabin in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and at the family condo in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Cyndie treated everyone she met with love, kindness, and respect; and throughout her life, Cyndie inspired those around her to join her in laughter, plant flowers, go on adventures, and be nice to other people. Cyndie is survived by her children, Aaron J. (Zacharie Jensen) Curtis, Marc A. (Jaime) Curtis, and Paul W. (Sara) Curtis; grandchildren Allison Curtis and Amna Souai; her partner Kevin D. Bookenberger and his son Alex Bookenberger; brothers Robin R. (Lorena), Douglas N. (Stephanie), and Donald P. (Dana) Whitner; sister-in-law Mary Kay Whitner; countless loving cousins, nieces, and nephews in the Whitner, Crane, Curtis, Dorn, Hicks, Boney, Hahn, and Richards families; and her soul mate Jenni (James) Hahn. Cyndie was preceded in death by her parents Phillip and Judith Whitner, and brother John D. Whitner. Cyndie was an ovarian cancer survivor for over six years. During this time, she saw all three of her sons get married; beamed with pride when her granddaughter played on the Rossford varsity girls’ soccer team as a freshman and learned that Paul and Sara would soon be giving her another grandchild; she went on adventures to the cabin and condo, Shawnee State Park, Washington, D.C., Seattle, and Salt Lake City; and she moved into a house in the country like she always dreamed of with her high school prom date. Her family will forever be grateful to the doctors, nurses, and other health care providers and staff at the Promedica Toledo Hospital, Promedica Home Care Services, Promedica Hospice, University of Toledo Medical Center, and the Victory Center who supported Cyndie with compassion, humor, and expert care during this time, and enabled Cyndie to continue enjoying life to its fullest until her last day. A memorial service to celebrate Cyndie’s life will be held at Perrysburg First United Methodist Church, 200 West Second Street, Perrysburg, Ohio on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg (419-874-3133).In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation in Cyndie’s honor be made to the Victory Center at thevictorycenter.org.
