Colleen Amelia Bourland

August 30, 1927 — December 2, 2017

Colleen Bourland, 90, of Sylvania, passed away on December 2, 2017 at Kingston Residence of Sylvania surrounded by her family. She was born on August 30, 1927, the only child of Forrest and Viola (Huber) Moore. Colleen was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School and the University of Toledo. On September 2, 1950, Colleen married James D. Bourland, Sr., and they were married for 43 joyful years before Jim’s death. Colleen and Jim had a marriage anchored in faith that was a true testament of gratitude and partnership. In 1995, Colleen married Paul Rembold and they were happily married for 10 years before he too preceded her in death. A Home Economics teacher, Colleen began her teaching career in Grosse Point, Michigan before moving back to Toledo and continuing her career with Toledo Public Schools at Hamilton/Leverette Junior High. There she spent 25 years teaching 7th and 8th grade students the joys of cooking and sewing, retiring in 1985. Colleen often commented throughout the years about how much she enjoyed working with middle school-aged students. Colleen was a church organist who started playing at the age of 16 for Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Toledo. She played part-time for various churches throughout the years, and loved the 15 years she spent as the organist for King of Glory Lutheran Church in Sylvania where she was a member. A woman of great faith, Colleen loved sharing her faith through music. She was a volunteer for Lutheran Social Services. Colleen and Jim shared a love of travel that began with family camping adventures. Throughout the years they traveled to all 50 states, throughout all of the Canadian provinces, and to 15 foreign countries. When one trip ended, they were busy planning the next. Deeply devoted to her family, Colleen loved attending the various activities of her grandchildren. She spent many hours at the hockey rink, on the side of a soccer field, watching dance recitals, and attending high school musicals, to name but a few. Colleen is survived by her children: James, Jr. (Sandra), David (Cheryl), and Rebecca (Patrick) Skelton; grandchildren: Sarah (Brian) Best, Carter (Juliana) Bourland, Nicole (Mark) Stansfield, David Bourland, Jennifer (Jeremy) Moore, Katherine (Dash Pomerantz) Skelton, Brad (Nicole) Skelton, and Megan Skelton; and great-grandchildren: Gracie Lukasik, Brynn and Cashton Best, twins Caleb and Owen Moore, and Brann Bourland. Colleen is also survived by step-daughter, Sally Scheff, and her family. In addition to her husbands, Colleen was preceded in death by her eldest grandson, Joshua Bourland. Colleen’s family would like to thank the Kingston Residence of Sylvania’s Memory Care Unit for the compassionate care they provided for Colleen, treating her with respect and dignity during the last 2 years of her life. Funeral services are being handled by Walker Funeral Home and will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the March of Dimes, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes), or a charity of the donor’s choice.
