Clifford Hanf

September 5, 1917 — September 12, 2007

HANF Clifford H. Another member of The Greatest Generation has died. Clifford H. Hanf, 90, passed away at Kingston on Wednesday, September, 12, 2007. He was born in Toledo on September 5, 1917, to Florence Balk and William Hanf. He married Jane Monaghan on November 2, 1942. Shortly after graduation from the University of Toledo with a degree in business administration, he was drafted into the U. S. Army with service beginning in the horse cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas. Like many young men of his generation, his military service was extended following Pearl Harbor. He completed Officers Training School at Duke University and was assigned to the Finance Corps at Fort Patrick Henry in Virginia where he earned the rank of Captain. In addition to his regular duties as a disbursing officer, he paid 13,000 American liberated POWs during the last 2 weeks of June, 1945, a feat which earned him commendation for Especially Meritorious and Outstanding Service. In addition, he was recognized with a WWII Victory Medal and an American Service Medal. He followed his active military service with 7 years in the Reserves. Returning to civilian life, Cliff worked as an accountant for Ernst and Ernst and as controller for the Swartzbaugh Manufacturing Company before joining Dana as an accountant in 1950. He was appointed manager of insurance and pensions and in December, 1967, was named assistant treasurer. In June, 1976, he became director of financial companies; he also served as a director of Solar International Limited, and as a member of the board of directors of Wrenford Insurance Company, Hopewell Insurance Company Limited, United Insurance Company, Power Bank and Trust Company, and Corona International Limited. He was a member of the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants and was honored as a member of the Key Club for his 50 years of membership and service to the Financial Executives Institute. He was one of the leaders of the movement to annex Adams Township to the City of Toledo. In addition, he was active in the Toledo Chapter of the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, serving as president and on the board of directors. What he will be remembered for, however, are the qualities of his character. Impeccably honest, his family likes to remember that, having randomly selected him for a total audit, the IRS could not assess even one more penny. He valued education, encouraging this pursuit with financial support to his children and grandchildren. He was, above all, a loving father, devoted to his family and committed to providing them not only with a comfortable life but also modeling for them how to live a life characterized by integrity, generosity, hard work and moral choices. He is survived by Jane Monaghan Hanf, his wife of almost 65 years; his daughters, Carole Tom Laasch, and Susan Dobbins, and his son, William Pam of Houston; his grand-children, Cassie Kevin Hand, Jaime Tom Rechsteiner, Matthew, Billy and Robbie Hanf, great-grandchildren, Colleen and Kyle Hand, and in-laws, Ann and Ed Nazar, Pat and Tom Tillman and Tom Monaghan, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. His daughter, Patty Hanf; grandson, Patrick Hanf; son-in-law, John Dobbins and sister, Mildred Weiss predeceased him. Friends and family may visit at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. west of Corey on Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. with the Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at Gesu Catholic Church on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. starting with prayers at the funeral home at 8:45 a.m. Memorials may be made to Gesu Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the Patricia Hanf Scholarship Fund at the University of Toledo.
