Clarence T. Stephens

Clarence Steve T. Stephens, 95, of Genoa, died Wednesday morning, January 23, 2008, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. Steve was born February 11, 1912, in California, Ohio, to Roy and Edna Megerly Stephens. On December 22, 1962, he married Marian J. Stevens Claus and she survives. From 1950-70 Steve was a deputy sheriff of Ottawa County and served as Sheriff from 1970-77. In the late 1940s he was Chief of Police in Genoa. Steve was a WWII Army veteran having served from 1943-46 and was a member of the VFW in Clay Center and the American Legion Post #324 of Genoa. He was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, Genoa, and a charter member of the Genoa Kiwanis Club. Steve was also an honorary member of the Clay-Genoa V.F.D. Steve enjoyed traveling to many places in the United States and abroad. Since 1946 he enjoyed going to his cottage in Michigan and taking his family fishing on the lake. After retirement he and Marian spent many years between their homes in Florida and northern Michigan. In addition to his wife, Marian, Steve is survived by his step sons, Donald G. Joy Claus of Millbury and Dwight A. Phyllis Claus of Genoa; step grandchildren, Barb, Steve, Deb, Jackie, Michelle, Joanna, Angie, and Darin; 12 step great grandchildren, and his niece Audrey Butzin. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Alice Hesselbart Stephens, who died in 1961, brothers, Charles and John Stephens, and sister, Mildred Butzin. Visitation will be 3:30-5:30 and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2008, in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home, Genoa. Additional visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. prior to the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2008, in St. Johns United Church of Christ, Genoa, with military graveside service to follow in Clay Township Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg or St. Johns UCC in Genoa.
