Clarence R. Smithers

Clarence R. Smithers, 79, of Millbury, Ohio, passed away surrounded by his loving family, on October 24, 2021, at Bay Park Community Hospital, after a long battle with fibrosis of the lungs. He was born on January 6, 1942, in Northwood, the son of Wayne F. and Mary L. (Traver) Smithers. He graduated from Lake High School, class of 1960. He met the love of his life in high school, Wilma C. (Bitter) and they were married in Zion Lutheran Church, Latcha, on April 20, 1963. Wilma preceded him in death on September 10, 2020, and he missed her dearly. Clarence, retired as a foreman in 1999, after working for GM Hydramatic Toledo for 38 years. He and Wilma enjoyed trips to Alaska, Switzerland, Hawaii and Arizona and going to Michigan to their 20, known as “Spruce Valley” where they made wonderful memories with their family and friends. As members of St. John Lutheran Church in Williston, they were always active in being part of the church family. They also enjoyed bird watching and attending as many of grandchildren’s sporting events as they possibly could, always cheering them on. Clarence and his family took an annual trip to Rock Lake in Ontario Canada to fish for two weeks and everyone loved the time they spent together there. He was a devout fan of the Cleveland Indians and the Ohio State Buckeyes and had been a volunteer fireman for 25 years with the Allen Township Fire Dept. before his retirement. Clarence is survived by his children, Mark Smithers, Karen (Bruce) Cutcher, Jill (Alan) Kao, Eric (Sara) Smithers, grandchildren, Joshua (Ashley) Cutcher, Stephanie Smithers (fiance, Kenny Lodge), Amanda Cutcher (fiance, Liz Honegger), Samuel Smithers, Nicholas Smithers, great granddaughters, Emma & Josie Cutcher, sister, June Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma, parents, brothers, Wayne Smithers and Clair Smithers and sister, Ella Freeman. A funeral service for Clarence will be conducted at 11 :00 AM, Thursday, October 28, 2021, in St. John Lutheran Church, Williston, Ohio. Visitation will be held from 2:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday, October 27, 2021, in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa, Ohio. Interment will take place in the Lake Township Cemetery, Millbury. Memorial contributions in Clarence’s name may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, PO Box 235, Williston, Ohio 43468.
