Charlotte (Gaynor) Saunders peacefully passed from this life on Monday, May 3, one day after her 90th birthday, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Her loving husband of 69 years was at her side at the time. Charlotte Gaynor was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 2, 1931 to Magdalena (Waller) and Charles Gaynor, and attended Libbey high school where at age 16 she met her husband David A. Saunders. They were married on August 23, 1952 at historic First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, where they have remained members. After Dave’s return from service in Korea, the couple moved to the Chicago area and shortly thereafter moved to Maumee, Ohio, and finally to Perrysburg, Ohio, where she spent the rest of her life. In addition to being a loving wife and mother of three children, she spent much of her younger years active in various local clubs and organizations, including the Junior League of Toledo, the Country Garden Club of Perrysburg, and the Toledo Museum of Art where she was a member of the first music docent class. She also was involved in the Red Cross, and headed up a newly-organized open heart surgery blood donation program for the area. Charlotte enjoyed playing tennis and golf, and together with Dave had memberships at Belmont Country Club, and Toledo Country Club. Dave and Charlotte traveled frequently, and together toured Portugal, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Austria, Spain, and Greece. They also regularly spent several months each winter in Sarasota, FL. She was a lover of all kinds of music and theater, including operas, musicals and stage plays, and attended productions for many seasons in Stratford, Canada and later attended Ohio Light Opera productions in Wooster, Ohio. She is survived by her husband David Allen Saunders and their three children – Cynthia “Cindy” Kurtz, Scott (Carol), and David, as well as three grandchildren, Timothy Kurtz, John Saunders and Cameron Saunders and two great-grandchildren, Calvin Saunders and Charlotte Saunders. She is also survived by her brother Louis “Butch” Gaynor, and sister Marie “Mickey” (Gaynor) Weber. She was predeceased by her sister Kathleen (Nov. 29, 2000), and brother Gerald (Oct. 9, 2009). She will be interred in the memorial garden at First Presbyterian Church of Maumee in a private service. A memorial service is planned to be held in September, also at First Presbyterian Church. Tributes may be made in her honor to the charitable organization of the donor’s choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). Condolences may be made to the family online at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
