Charlotte H. Kirk

May 13, 1917 — June 13, 2018

Charlotte H. Kirk, age 101, of Ottawa Hills, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2018, at Sunset House. Born on May 13, 1917, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Albert Holle and Lottie Louise (Dailey) Homrighaus, she was the widow of Edwin Roger Kirk (d. 1986). Her parents were charter members of Hope Lutheran Church, and she was in Hopes first confirmation class. Hope Church remained an important part of her life. Charlottes education included graduating from DeVilbiss High School and earning Bachelor of Arts degrees from Wittenburg University and National College of Education (now National Lewis University), as well as a Master of Arts degree from Purdue University. While at Wittenburg, Charlotte became a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and participated in their bridge group until the end of her life. She delighted in pursuing her intellectual interests through the American Association of University Womens biography and art museum groups. Charlotte relished her time with family and friends, took pleasure in volunteer work, enjoyed classical music concerts, travel, reading, walking, observing nature, and watching PBS. She was a vivid, intelligent person with a dry wit and a vast curiosity about the world, who was committed to making a positive difference in life. Helping to promote high quality early childhood education was one way of pursuing positive change. She strongly believed that a sound preschool education was the foundation of later social and intellectual achievement. After learning to teach children herself, Charlotte shared her skills by teaching preschool teachers to teach as a faculty member at National College of Education. Left to cherish Charlottes memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Page Kirk and Alfred Davis Land, and her beloved nieces and nephews and their children. Charlotte was preceded in death by her elder daughter, Charlotte Louise Kirk (d. 2010). She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. A Celebration of Charlottes Life will be held at Hope Lutheran Church, 2201 Secor Rd., Toledo, OH 43606, on July 17, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. Her ashes will be interred in Charlottesville, Virginia. Tributes in her memory may be directed to Hope Churchs endowment fund, the American Cancer Society, or Sunset House. Arrangements by the Walker Funeral Home. Online condolences may be placed at walkerfuneralhomes.com
