Charles J. Vollmar, age 92, passed away peacefully at the Franciscan Care Center in Toledo, Ohio. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to Charles and Barbara Vollmar and was the oldest of nine children. After training at the Macomber Vocational High School, Charles went on to be an accountant, working for the Dura Corporation for many years before his retirement. He had a love for his family, golf, and traveling, including going to Florida with his sister, Theresa. In 1943, Charles was drafted into service in World War II, at the age of 19. As a child and throughout his adult life he had a love for airplanes, including building model airplanes. It was this interest that caught the attention of the draft board and ultimately placed Charles into the Army Air Force. He remained there until the Battle of the Bulge where he was reassigned to the Army. There he served under Gen. Pattons 3rd Army and was part of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. By the end of the war, he received three ribbons, including a bronze star, and a victory medal. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Fern Vollmar; wife, Marie Vollmar; sisters, Rita Grayczyk, and Bernadette Winhoven; brother, Donald Vollmar; brother-in-laws, James Finch, and Bernard Grayczyk; niece, Shirley; and nephew, Lance Keiffer. He is survived by his son, David (Mary) Vollmar; sisters, Theresa (Harley) Weide, Patricia (Robert) Evans; brothers, Edward (Zita) Vollmar, Alfred (Connie) Vollmar, and Gerald (Mary) Vollmar; grandchildren, Linda, Brian, Eric, and Jackie; as well as, three step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, January 14 from 4-8PM in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.). Funeral Services will be held at 10AM on Friday, January 15 at St. Joseph Parish Church, 5373 Main St., Sylvania, Ohio. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
