Charles W Poore

Charles W. Poore, age 90 of Toledo passed away Sunday, April 1, 2018 in the Ebeid Hospice Residence, Sylvania. He was born August 12, 1927 in Toledo to Charles T. and Marguerite (Heath) Poore. A graduate of Macomber High School, he attended the University of Toledo, and was a proud male Rocket cheerleader. One of Chucks proudest accomplishments was being a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II. He continued his service after the war, participating in missions throughout South America, the Mediterranean and Middle East, on various vessels. Chuck joined the US Naval Reserves in aviation, and he retired from the US Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate First Class after 20 years service. He was a proud member of VR732, an air transport squad from Gross Isle, Michigan Naval Air Station. Chucks military career was documented in an audio taped interview in the Veterans History Project, which is cataloged in the US Library of Congress. He began his civilian career working for his great uncle at the former Seiss Manufacturing, then trained as a draftsman and worked at Toledo Scale and Toledo Engineering. He also worked for the New York Central Railroad as a fireman. Chuck was hired at Toledo GM Powertrain and worked in product engineering and inspection. While there, he developed a computer that automated quality testing of the transmissions and retired after 31 years. While working at GM, he also received the Toledo Humanitarian Award for saving a co-workers life who was accidentally electrocuted at the factory. Chuck was a member of Con Weissenberger Post of the American Legion and was a drummer for the Sons of the American Legion Drum Corp which became the Toledo Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corp. He created and was Scout Master of Boy Scout troop 371 in Bedford, Michigan. Chuck was a member of the Blue Lodge-Rubicon lodge of F & AM, the Scottish Rite and Toledo Zenobia Shrine and performed with the Highlanders Bagpipe unit of the shrine and most recently was a member of the Legion of Honor. He also helped restore a steam engine, The Bluebird Special, an excursion train that ran from Waterville to Grand Rapids and was part of its crew as a fireman and engineer. Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Marilyn; daughter Joyce (Michael) Poore-Williams; sons Charles R. and William T. Poore; grandchildren Adam (Anna) Jaffe Back, Evan Back, and Nathan and Lindsey Poore; great grandson Leo Jaffe Back; sister Nan Freeman; and brothers Thomas (Cathy) and Robert (Erma) Poore; sister-in-laws Patricia Sinn-Clemens (Ralph) and Carol Kinsey. Friends may visit the family on Thursday from 3-8 PM in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey). Funeral services will be held Friday, April 6 at 11 am in Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4030 Douglas Rd. Toledo Ohio 43613. Interment to follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
