Charles John Muto

Charles was born May 30, 1929, the son of Charles and Anna Muto of Pontiac, MI. He graduated from Pontiac High School in 1947. He attended Illinois Institute of Technology where he received a degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1951 he was commissioned as Ensyn with the United States Navy. He served on the USS Merganser Minesweeper during the Korean War and later on the heavy cruiser, Macon.

In 1959 Charles graduated from the United States Naval Postgraduate School with a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. His subsequent naval service was in the field of naval engineering and ship design, including duty at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and as Supervisor of Shipbuilding at American Ship Facility in Lorain and Toledo.

During the Vietnam War he served aboard the USS England and on the staff of the Pacific Fleet Commander. Charles continued to serve in Washington, D.C. in various assignments at the Bureau of Ships, including as Director of Marine Engineering.

Charles retired from the Navy as a Captain in 1978 and joined the firm of M. Rosenblatt & Sons, where he participated in various ship design projects, both military and civilian.

In 1969 he married Janet Lawless, also of Pontiac, MI. They resided in Washington, D.C. and Arlington, VA before moving to Toledo in 1992. A lifelong antique and book collector, he and his wife enjoyed attending book and antique fairs throughout the region.

Charles was preceded in death by his siblings, Florence Grogan and George Muto. He is survived by his wife, Janet, many nieces and nephews, and his special book friend, Pete Baughman of Frogtown Books.

Friends and family are invited to visit on Friday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave, Toledo, OH. A time sharing of memories will take place at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
