Charles R. Mitchell

Charles Richard Mitchell, age 74, of Maumee, OH, died on June 9, 2011 in his home at peace in the arms of his loved ones. Charles was born in Marion, Ohio on September 1, 1936, the son of Clifford and Rose McLean Mitchell. He was a graduate of St. Marys High School in Marion and attended George Washington University and Ohio State University. He served 3 years in the U. S. Marine Corps, stationed in Miami Beach where he was a sergeant and worked as a journalist. During high school, he was manager of a roller skating rink in Marion, Ohio. He was an excellent skater. Charles retired in 1998 from Conrail after serving 38 years as an Engineer with several railroad companies. He was a member of the United Transportation Union and has served as an officer. Charles was of the Catholic faith and attended St. Patrick of Heatherdowns. Charles loved cruising the Caribbean and other waters. Music was one of his joys, and he especially liked the big band music at Trotters on Tuesday nights. He enjoyed playing Baggo with his many friends at Waterside where he resided with his beloved wife, Laurie Clifton Mitchell. They were married October 9, 1982. He leaves his wife, Laurie, and his daughters, from his first marriage to Carole Mitchell Boyd, Vickie McClellan of Toledo, OH, Denise Douglas Rutherford of Atlanta, GA, and Kerrie Mitchell of Marion, OH; grandchildren, Michael and Marcus McClellan, Laurel and Madelyn Rutherford and Kristal, Nathan and Darren Lawrence and great granddaughter, MaKayla Lawrence, also his special cat, Emmitt and many, many friends who have been so loyal during his short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Krista Bernard. The family thanks all of the people of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, the doctors and nurses of Toledo Hospital, St. Lukes Hospital, and his many devoted friends for all their kindness and thoughtfulness. Family and friends may call at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee on Monday, June 13, 2011 from 3-8 pm and Tuesday after 10:00 am followed by services at 11:00 am.
