Charles F. Mann, Sr.

Charles F. Mann Sr., age 89, passed away at Kingston Residence on September 19, 2014. Born December 18th, 1924 in the family home on Chase St. in Toledo, he was the son of Charles F. Mann II and Leona Schlagheck. Charles attended St. Michael the Archangel and Riverside Schools and was a graduate of Woodward High School, Class of 1943, where he was the editor of the school paper, The Tattler. He was inducted into the Woodward Hall of Fame in 2005. He served his country in Europe in World War II, joined the Army ASTP program and then attended the University of Toledo. Upon graduation, he joined his father to form the Chas. F. Mann Painting Co. The company was the largest and oldest painting firm in Northwest Ohio. He married Joanne Belair on June 24, 1950. They spent retirement traveling extensively; summers at the family cottage on Devil’s Lake and winters in Bonita Springs, Florida. They have been members of Christ the King Catholic Church since its inception under Father Basil Goes. Charles has been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Downtown for over 50 years and was president from 1982-1983. He was awarded the George F. Hixon award for meritorious service from Kiwanis International in 1999. He was active in the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America as local president, state president and national regional vice president, and served as a judge on the National Union Apprenticeship Committee. He served on the Union Construction Workers Health and Welfare plan for 18 years, the Joint Labor board for 24 years, and was a director of the Painters’ Pension fund for 32 years. His parents, Charles F. Mann II and Leona Schlagheck and sister, Virginia Harste, precede him in death. He is survived by Joanne, his wife of 64 years, children Charles F. Mann IV (Barbara), Margaret Ann Meyers (Jeffrey), Richard T. Mann (Barbara) and Martha Shearman (Mark), and grandchildren, Charles F. Mann V (Tonya), Christopher Mann, Katherine Schroeder (Kurt), Jennifer Miligan (John), Michael Meyers (Kristen), Lori Bartkowiak (Matt), Nicole Pelker (Chris), William Mann, Evan Shearman, Madeline Shearman, 9 great-grandchildren and nephew, Charles W. (Nancy) Harste. Friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 4-9 PM at Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd) with a Rosary at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will begin Thursday with prayers at the funeral home at 9:30 AM followed by Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 AM at Christ The King Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Charles family would like to thank the caring staf at Kingston Assisted Living in Sylvania and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
