Charles F. Kahle

Dr. Charles Franz Kahle, age 84 of Perrysburg, OH passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015 in his home surrounded by his loving family.  Charles was born in Toledo, OH on June 2, 1930 to Frank J. and Norma M. (Huber) Kahle and raised in Ottawa, OH.  He served in the US Army, Engineers from 1954-1956. Dr. Kahle graduated from Sts Peter Paul High in Ottawa, OH; earned his B.S. at St. Josephs College, Indiana,  Majored in Geology and minored in Chemistry; M.S., Miami University, OH Majored in Geology; Ph.D at the University of Kansas, Majored in Geology and minored in metallurgy. He held the positions of Professor Emeritus, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor at Bowling Green State University Department of Geology. Dr. Kahle was also an Assistant Professor at the Universities of Toledo and Oklahoma State.  He was a Petroleum Geologist for Mobil Petroleum Company. Dr. Kahles professional societies included the Society for Sedimentary Geology; Great Lakes Section- Society for Sedimentary Geology; Northwestern Ohio Electron Microscopy Society and the Geological Society of America.  Dr. Kahle was the chairman of 34 M.S. thesis committees, and served as a member of 82 thesis committees during his years of service at B.G.S.U.  He was the Chair of the Department of Geology from 1984-1992; an Associate Editor, Geological Society of America Bulletin from 1993-1996, and an Associate Editor, Journal of Sedimentary Petrology from 1987-1989.  At various times, he was a consultant to shell and Amaco Petroleum Companies. Dr. Kahle was awarded Bowling Green State Universitys Master Teacher Award in 1994.  He received numerous grants, and was the author and co-author of over 50 geological scientific  publications.  He was an authority on the geology of Silurian rocks in Ohio, including rocks near his gravesite in Riverside Cemetery, Maumee, OH. Dr. Kahle was world renown for research about the Maumee River.  He was an avid lover of the West, especially a fondness for the Tetons, Jackson, WY and would often sleep under the stars on a picnic bench.  Dr. Kahle enjoyed jogging, photography and travel, especially National Parks and Monuments. He was a member of Therapy Dogs International and he would visit the area hospitals and libraries with his therapy dog named Ace. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Rosemary; children, Charles II (Ann) of Pittsburgh, PA; Thomas (Susan) of Westerville, OH; Suzanne (Ralph) of Okemos, MI; David of Yankton SD;  Steven of Toledo, OH and Sarah (Trevor) of Perrysburg, OH;  11 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter; sister, Helen Willett; and brothers, Frank D. Kahle and Peter (Huber) Kahle. He was preceded in death by his parents. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the exceptional care that Charles received in his home. He will always be remembered as a loving devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. Visitation will be held at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Prayers will begin at the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, with the Funeral Mass held at St. Rose Parish, 215 E. Front Street, Perrysburg at 11:00 AM.  Interment to follow at Riverside Cemetery, Maumee.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Toledo Animal Shelter, 640 Wyman Street, Toledo, Ohio 43609 or Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E.
