It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles J. Smith, affectionately known as Chuck or Grumpa, who left us peacefully on October 3, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on May 17, 1947, in Toledo, OH, Charles lived a full and vibrant life, marked by his deep love for family and a passion for helping others.
A proud Army veteran, Charles served honorably and was discharged on April 30, 1973. He spent over 30 years as a chemist, where his intelligence and problem-solving skills shone brightly. But outside the lab, he was a true renaissance man-a handy, frugal but generous guy with a knack for making rosaries, baking mouth-watering cheesecakes, and even crafting his own bourbon. He was a fantastic cook, always ready to whip up a meal for family or friends.
Charles had a big heart for animals, from cats and dogs to squirrels and birds; they all brought him joy. Family was everything to him, and he cherished his role as a grandfather, always involved in the lives of his grandkids-Camden, Haley, Boston Kopke, and Blake Nelson-who adored him.
He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Edgar P. and Joan M. (Williams) Smith, his wife, Jaqulyn Hiser, and his brothers, David L. and Edgar P. Smith Jr. He leaves behind his daughter, Jenniffer (Ryan Nelson) Kopke, and son, Joshua Smith, as well as his brothers, Frederick J. (Diane) Smith, Stephen L. (Sue) Smith, and Daniel L. (Jan) Smith; sisters, Sarah L. (Gary) Wend and Joan M. (Dan) Hetzner; and sisters-in-law, Carol Smith and Sandy Z. (Ron) Callanhan.
For all who knew him, Charles' warmth, humor, and kindness will be deeply missed. A gathering will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 12 pm to 3 pm at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. Interment will take place on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 10 am at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local animal shelter, honoring his love for all creatures great and small. Rest in peace, Charles; you will always be in our hearts.
