Charles K. "Chad" Culpert

December 3, 1952 — August 17, 2021

Charles K. “Chad” Culpert, 68, died Tuesday August 17,2021 at his home on Merry Lake, near Camden Michigan. While many knew Chad from his work as a Toledo Police detective, those close to him will always remember him as a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and chocolate lover. Chad was born December 3, 1952 in Toledo to Kenneth and Mary Ann Culpert, the oldest of 4 children. He graduated from St. Francis deSales High School in 1970 and attended the University of Toledo. After working at various jobs, Chad found his true calling when he became a Toledo Police officer in 1979. He worked as a uniform patrolman for 5 years before being named a detective in 1984. Chad joined the Scientific Investigative Unit and investigated some 250 homicides as a crime scene detective. He was qualified as an expert witness by multiple courts in fingerprint identification, evidence collection, and crime scene reconstruction. Over his career, Chad earned the respect of fellow officers, judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys for his thoroughness, honesty and professionalism. Chad loved his job and it showed. He retired from the police force in 2011, after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Chad is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cheri Culpert; his daughters April Szczepanski (Joe Rosado) of Walbridge, Jennifer Hoernig (Scott) of Evans City, Pa; and son CJ Culpert of Bowling Green; as well as his grandchildren, Matthew and Camryn Szczepanski, and Austin and Alexis Hoernig. Also surviving are his sisters, Barbara (Jim) Yavorcik, Ann (Fritz) Comes of Toledo, and Sister Mary Ann Culpert SND, Rome, Italy. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his beloved aunt Louise “Weesie” Culpert. Chad was truly a man who put others first. He cherished his time with family on Merry Lake, and always made sure everyone especially the grandchildren enjoyed their visit. The family will receive visitors at Sujkowski Walker Funeral Home 830 Lime City Road, in Rossford from 3-8 pm Friday. A Funeral Mass will be held at Gesu Church on Parkside Boulevard at 10 am Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations can made to Wood Lane Industries, Bowling Green or the Toledo Police Foundation.
