Charles “Charlie” E. Vermilyea, 63, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 14, 2025, in Maumee, Ohio.
Charlie was born on February 16, 1962, in Toledo, Ohio, to William and Geraldine (Smith) Vermilyea. The youngest of seven children, he later moved with his family to northern Michigan. He graduated from Benzie Central High School in 1980 and proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a Communications and Surface Warfare Specialist.
After completing his military service, Charlie returned to the Toledo area, where he started a family and worked in various auto-service–related positions. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in the early 2000s and always tried to make the best of his progressive disability. Charlie was a proud veteran who loved the Detroit Tigers, rock and roll, trips “up north,” lighthouses, and all things nautical.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers David, Steve, and William Vermilyea; and twin sisters June Taylor and Judy Hill. He is survived by his sister, Sandi (Bob) Faulkner; many nieces and nephews; his children, Jessica (Chris) Young and Lucas Vermilyea; and three grandsons.
Memorial services are not planned at this time but will be held in Michigan in the summer of 2026. The family will share details once arrangements are finalized.
