Charles R. Carr, Jr.

July 16, 1954 — September 20, 2018

Charles “Charlie” R. Carr, Jr. (64), a loving and proud husband, father and grandfather, and a passionate community volunteer and endearing friend to anyone with whom he met, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018 while surrounded by family and friends. Charlie was the first born of three children to Charles (Sr.) and Helyn (Rigney) Carr on July 16, 1954 in Toledo, Ohio. Always close with family, his father inspired Charlie at a young age to join him as an athletic trainer for Maumee Public School sports and, later, at the Maumee Volunteer Fire Department as a fire fighter and emergency medical technician. These were defining roles for Charlie, who learned from his parents to always put his family and his community first. After graduating from Maumee High School in 1972, Charlie started working part-time for a local retail and agribusiness company called The Andersons, which blossomed into a large conglomerate during his 43 years of service. He proudly represented The Andersons and its founding family on various boards, including the Ohio Seed Improvement Association, of which he was a past president. When not spending time with his family and friends, volunteering or working, you could find Charlie on a golf course; fishing at one of his cherished rivers, lakes or streams; and cheering for The Ohio State Buckeyes. A lifelong resident of the area, Charlie never wavered in contributing his time and leadership to St. Joseph Maumee Catholic Parish and School, the City of Maumee, Maumee Public Schools, Save Maumee Little League, Maumee Holiday Lights Parade, Maumee Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus, Queen of Apostle School in Toledo, American Cancer Society, and many others. The culmination of his unselfish community efforts led to Charlie receiving the Maumee Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award in 2009. Left to carry on Charlie’s unselfish acts are his wife Mary, son Andy (Lindsey), daughter Angela (Dave Sturtz), mother Helyn, brother Rich (Laura), sister Jody (Don Albright), his beloved grandchildren Ava and Aubrey, and nephews and nieces Dan, A.J., Jody, Sarah, and Alena. Visiting hours will be held from 2-8 pm on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker, 501 Conant St, Maumee, OH 43537 with the Rosary to be recited by The Knights of Columbus at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 104 W. Broadway, Maumee, Ohio 43537. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are asked to consider a donation to the Panther Pride Foundation Fund, care of the Toledo Community Foundation. The Fund supports academics, athletics, arts, and other activities, which provide enrichment and education for the betterment of Maumee High School students. Checks can be made payable to the Panther Pride Foundation Fund (in memory of Charlie Carr) and mailed to Toledo Community Foundation, Inc. at 300 Madison Avenue, Suite 1300, Toledo, Ohio 43604; by credit card (call 419-241-5049, ext. 105); or online at https://asoft4241.accrisoft.com/tcf/forms/make-a-donation/. Alternatively, please consider donating to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Road, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
