Charles Robert Boyd

Charles Robert Boyd C. Robert Boyd, 97, of Perrysburg, Ohio died Saturday, March 10, 2018, of natural causes, at The Waterford at Levis Commons. He was born in Owensville, Missouri on December 17, 1920 to William and Emily (Langguth) Boyd. He married Mary Carr Boyd on February 23, 1943 and together they spent 67 years together until her passing on February 8, 2009. Mr. Boyd, a native of Missouri, came to Perrysburg in 1954 and joined the former Blanco Advertising Agency of Toledo. He later spent two years as public relations manager of the Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce before joining NFO Research, Inc. where he spent nearly 30 years directing public relations, sales promotion and marketing services. He saw the local consumer research firm grow from a staff of some fifty people to one of the largest in the nation, with surveys done for clients in the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia. He was responsible for creating the continuing consumer confidence study used by the New York-based Conference Board to predict national economic trends. A 1942 graduate of the University Of Missouri School Of Journalism, he served as a field artillery forward observer in combat in Europe during World War II, reaching the rank of captain. He returned to edit a family weekly newspaper in Missouri for several years and was with the W. A. Sheaffer Pen Co. before coming here. He was active over the years in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA and Little League, and upon retirement in 1985 devoted the rest of his life to community area causes, serving on many volunteer boards including Wood County Friends of the Parks, Wood County Historical Center, Perrysburg Area Arts Council, the Ecumenical Communications Commission of Northwest Ohio, Historic Perrysburg, Inc., YMCA Camp Store, the Perrysburg Symphony Association, Perrysburg Symphony Chorale and the Perrysburg Area Historical Museum. He served on the Perrysburg Board of Zoning Appeals, the Historic Landmarks Commission, and was a Wood County Park District commissioner for ten years. In 2013, Bob was given the Bentley Award for Historic Preservation. As a long-time volunteer in the local history room at Perrysburg’s Way Library, he was known for his knowledge of Perrysburg history. For a number of years he researched and wrote articles on old homes and buildings and other local history subjects; including the Perrysburg Historic Architecture Book of which he wrote and published. He also wrote and published, The History of The Hamlet and The History of the Carranor Club, with the 2nd edition soon to be published. He was active in the Episcopal Church and a founding member and past senior warden of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. He was past president of the Toledo Episcopal Regional Council, past chairman of the Diocese of Ohio Planning Commission and a member of the Diocesan Standing Committee. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Carranor Hunt and Polo Club, the Wood County Historical Society and Toledo Post 335, American Legion. C. Robert Boyd is survived by his sons, C. Robert Boyd, Jr. and William (Lorna) Boyd; grandchildren, Marcus (Judy) Boyd, Eric (Amanda) Boyd, Adam Boyd and Leslie (Andy) Miller, Keegan Boyd, Avery (Ian) Nilsen and Hayden Boyd, and eight great-grandchildren. Along with his wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Blanche Wolpers. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2018 from 10:00-10:30 A.M. at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 871 East Boundary Street, Perrysburg, Ohio, 43551, where a memorial service will begin at 10:30 A.M. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). Memorial contributions made be made in C. Robert’s name to St. Timothy’s Endowment Fund or Perrysburg Area Historical Museum, 27340 W. River Road, Perrysburg, OH 43551.
