Charles Norman Bliss, fondly known as Charlie to his friends and Chuck to his beloved family, passed away on July 24, 2025, at St. Charles Hospital. He was 77 years old.
Born on February 3, 1948, in Toledo, Ohio, Charlie was the son of Norman and Margaret Bliss. A lifelong resident of the Toledo area, he spent his career working in building maintenance at the Fairway Condominiums, where he formed many lasting friendships with residents and co-workers alike. Charlie was known for his helpful spirit and warm presence, always ready with a kind word or a story to share.
Charlie took great pride in his home, especially his beautifully maintained garden and his cherished greenhouse. An avid gardener, he found peace and joy tending to his plants—especially his collection of orchids, which he lovingly cared for in a room he converted into a greenhouse.
Family meant everything to Charlie. He especially treasured visits to Florida to spend time with his daughter and enjoy days at the beach. Some of his happiest memories were made at the Toledo Zoo, where he loved visiting alongside his daughter and granddaughter. It remained one of his favorite places throughout his life.
A curious mind and sharp wit defined Charlie. He was an avid reader, especially of newspapers, and never turned down a good crossword puzzle. Highly intelligent and never shy about sharing his thoughts, he regularly wrote letters to the editor and enjoyed spirited conversations about current events. His opinions were strong, but always came from a place of deep thought and care.
Charlie also had a lifelong fondness for late-night talk shows, with David Letterman and Stephen Colbert among his favorites. These shows brought him comfort and laughter through the years.
He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, deep convictions, and the beauty he cultivated in both his garden and his relationships.
Charlie is survived by his daughter, Amanda Wolf; granddaughter, Kendall (Chris) Showman; great-grandson, Dean Showman; brother, Rick Bliss; and sister, Nancy Bliss. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial donations may be given to the Toledo Zoo.
