Caryl Jean Hayes age 71 of Maumee, Ohio passed away on Monday, April 4, 2016. She was born in Dayton, OH on February 26, 1945 to Ross E. and Marilyn (Weaver) Kettering. Caryl earned her Masters degree in Education at Wright State University and her undergraduate degree at Miami University. Caryl had a passion for education. She began her career as a French teacher, and was proud member of the Northmont City Schools staff as an English teacher for over 20 years. Even after retirement, she continued to substitute on a regular basis for the local schools. She was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, Dayton, OH; West Milton United Church of Christ, West Milton, OH; and Grace United Methodist Church, Perrysburg, OH. Caryl enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bridge, quilting and baking. She spent many evenings out to dinner with friends, enjoying theater and the Red Hats Society functions. She is survived by her son, Micah D. (Julia) Getter; daughter, Rachel M. (Brian) Birt; grandchildren, Mikayla, Zackary, Zander, Brayden and Cassidy; brother, Ross K. (Vicky) Kettering; sisters, Lisa Bierer, Robyn (Terry) Heller, Tracy (Lance) Chaplin and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her many friends from Meadowdale High School. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Scott K. Hayes and sister, Roslyn. Visitation times for Caryl will be held at Baker/Hazel/Snider Funeral Home at 5555 Philadelphia Dr. Dayton, OH on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from 6-8 PM. Interment will be a family memorial at Arlington Cemetery, Brookeville, OH. Memorial contributions may be made in Caryl’s honor by donating a book to your local school library, supporting a local church mission trip, or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
