Carter Smith

Carter Smith, of Perrysburg, OH passed away peacefully on July 17, 2022 at the age of 96. A loving family mentor, revered community member, and loyal friend, Carter will be remembered for his career accomplishments and civic contributions, exceptional generosity, wise counsel, steady manner, and kindness.

Carter was born to Thomas W. Smith Jr. and Dorothy Hordern Smith in Pittsburgh, PA on March 15, 1926. He attended the Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, graduated from Philips Academy, and then from Yale University in 1949. Carter served in the American Field Service during WWII as a medical ambulance driver in India. In 1942, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth D. Morris (Tony) while at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY, the first of many summers spent enjoying the cultural offerings of this special lakeside community. Carter and Tony made Perrysburg, OH their home, raising three children and sharing a rich and loving life for 60 years before Tony’s passing in 2007.

Carter began his financial career with Colin Norton, which became Clark Dodge, then Kidder Peabody, Paine Webber, and eventually UBS. With 66 years of dedicated service, Carter was bestowed the honor of Longest Tenured Employee Worldwide, working until his 89 th birthday.

Carter was an avid hunter and fisherman, bested only by his wife Tony. Together, they enjoyed many years of duck hunting with friends at Erie Marsh Preserve, fishing at Rockwell Fishing Club, and looked forward to annual trout fishing excursions to Idaho. Carter committed years of leadership to many community organizations, serving on the Boards of: Florence Crittendon, Planned Parenthood, MVCDS Endowment, and Perrysburg Zoning Board. Carter was an active member of the Carranor Hunt & Polo Club.

Carter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Tony, his brother Thomas W. Smith III and sister Dorothy Donaldson. Carter is survived by his three children: Jeffrey C. Smith (Susan) of Perrysburg, OH, Scott R. Smith (Meg) of Wenham, MA, Cynthia S. Evanisko (Michael) of Winchester, MA and Hilton Head, SC; his nine grandchildren: Courtney Humphrey (Joseph), Tyler Smith (Mo Moore), Sarah Smith (Bryan Griesemer), Libby O’Regan (Mick Kuehn), Carter B. Smith (Rebecca Kilburn), Reed Smith, Sam Crossan (Lindsay), Nelle Crossan, Sarah Crossan, and nine great grandchildren: Molly, Connor, Jackson, Hudson, Lucas, Max, Wren, Gabriel, and Henry.

A memorial service to celebrate Carter’s life will be held at the Carranor Hunt & Polo Club, Perrysburg, OH at 11am, on August 20, 2022. Burial will be private.
