Carolyn J. Hammer

Carolyn J. Hammer, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025, surrounded by the love and care of her family.

Born on January 2, 1935, Carolyn lived a life rooted in service, community, and quiet strength. She retired in 1997 after 25 years working as a school lunch lady—a job she cherished for the children, the routine, and the sense of purpose it brought her.

In retirement, she became a fixture at her local senior center, volunteering nearly every day. She served meals, played bingo, card games and made crafts. She also served several terms on the board of directors. Her devotion to staying active and helping others defined her days and brought joy to many.

Carolyn is survived by her children, Ruthann, Lori (Bill) Finn, Ralph, and Michael (Wendy); sisters, June Englehardt, Tish Whitmore, and Sharon Fuller; as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; her daughters, Joanne and Caroline (Bubbles); her son, Pat; and sons-in-law, John Machaterre, Dave Riling.

In her later years, she lived with her son Michael and daughter-in-law Wendy, who cared for her with deep love and fierce commitment.

Carolyn remained active and independent until her illness began in June 2025. She spent her final weeks at home, where she was cared for with love and dignity. Special thanks to Ruthann for the commitment to her mother’s care.

Friends and family are invited to visit at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave, Toledo, OH, on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, July 26, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
