Carol Joan (Berning) Morten, age 87, of Sylvania, passed away peacefully September 9, 2014. She was born August 24, 1927 in Toledo to the late Elmer W. and Neva B. (Van Tassel) Hinkleman and graduated from Scott High School in 1945. Carol received her Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Development from BGSU in 1949 and earned a Masters degree in administration and special education from the University of Toledo in 1968. She taught kindergarten at Longfellow, Stranahan and Whiteford Elementary Schools and later started the special education program for the Sylvania City Schools; in 1978 Carol became a District Learning Disabilities Coordinator, and in 1989 she served as District learning Disabilities Care Manager/Assistant Director of Student Services. Carol retired in 1990 as the Director of Special Education for Sylvania schools and was nominated as an Educator of the Year. Carol was a member of McCord Road Christian Church, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority (serving as president from 1974-76), the Scepter Club and was Past Worthy Matron of Order of Eastern Star, Sylvania. She was a longtime volunteer at the Sylvania Historical Society and Salvation Army and served on the Board of the Sylvania Area Credit Union. In her free time, Carol enjoyed shopping, dining with friends and traveling. She also remained active with Scott H.S. class reunions. Left to cherish her memory include her children, Jody L. Berning-Mauer, Holly A. Berning-McDowell (Richard) and Heidi J. Berning-Malak (Melvin, Jr.); grandchildren, Carol Swain (William), Sarah and Elizabeth Harrison, Taylor Malak (Kathryn), Alexander and John Malak, Adrienne and Tyler Morten; sister-in-law, Lois Hinkleman; step sons, William and Ronald Morten; and daughter-in-law, Annette Morten-Harrison. She was preceded in death by husbands, James A. Berning and William G. Morten; and twin brother, Calvin J. Hinkleman. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, September 14, 2014 in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.). Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at McCord Road Christian Church, 4765 N McCord Rd, Sylvania. Interment Toledo Memorial Park.
