Carl A. White, age 93, of Toledo passed away Thursday, October 4, 2011 in Sunset House. He was born July 13, 1918 in Archbold, Ohio to Arthur I. and Florence Burdick White. He was an owner in the family business, A. I. White and Sons, Inc., residential builders that made a lasting impact in West Toledo neighborhoods. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II serving in the South Pacific and participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima at the base of Mount Suribachi. Carl was mentioned in the book What A Time It Was: Interviews With Northwest Ohio Veterans of World War II. As part of this project he was interviewed about his World War II experiences and the recording is in the Canaday Center and the Library of Congress. A lifelong student of Western lore and cowboy culture, he was a gun collector and avid marksman. He enjoyed social gaming such as casinos, bingo and card games, which then led to internet gaming which he mastered in his 90s and earned him the family nickname of Mario. Friendly with a ready wit he enjoyed joking around with all he came in contact with. Preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn and brother, John. He is survived by sons, Carl N. Kathleen Carroll White and Ronald J. Patricia White; grandchildren, Catherine White Kasch Stefan, Elizabeth White, Wendy Roger Christoff, Kristy Randall Shepler, Lauren Michael Lewis and Holly Jonathan Yoder; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Jackson; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Welty. Friends may visit the family on Thursday from 4-8 at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey where funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 AM followed by interment in Toledo Memorial Park with full military honors.
