Carl L. Mercer

Carl L. Mercer, 88, of Perrysburg, Ohio died Sunday, February 21, 2016 at home. He was born in Adena, Ohio, the son of James Saylor and Anna Louise (Williams) Mercer. He graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy the same year, and served in the Southwest Pacific theater on the AGP-12 USS Acontius, Motor Torpedo Boat Tender, receiving an honorable discharged in 1946. Carl was involved in the Boy Scouts of America since before his marriage and held positions with them, including Scoutmaster, District Chairman, and National Jamboree Scoutmaster, and attended the National Valley Forge Jamboree and Philmont Scout Ranch. He was an Athletic Booster of Perrysburg High School, an active member, serving in many capacities, of the Perrysburg United Methodist Church, American Legion #28, Perrysburg and VFW# 6170, Ohio, and Elks #1850 Maumee-Bowling Green. He retired in 1994 after 33 years in the insurance business holding positions as a regional manger and as owner of Carl Mercer and Associates Insurance. Carl was an avid golfer and served as an officer of Riverby Golf Club and President of Valleywood Golf Club, and was a member of Sun ‘N Lakes Golf Club, Sebring, Florida. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, hunting and fishing. He was an avid sports fan, following OSU football and attending the Indianapolis 500 for over 30 years. He is survived by Ramona J. Mercer, his wife of 64 years, children Marla Michelsen (Kevin, deceased) of Perrysburg, Christine Mercer Kraft (James) of Lawrence, Kansas, grandchildren, Rachel (Mercer) Scherley, Caitlin, Anna and Garrett Mercer, Kelly (Michelsen) Yaw, Jeremy Michelsen, Daniel Michelsen, and five great-grandsons. He is preceeded in death by his parents, sister Mary Lou King, and son, Douglas Carl Mercer. Friends and family will be received at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee on Friday, February 26, 2016 from 2PM until 4PM and 6PM until 8PM. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 10:30 AM at First United Methodist Church, 200 W. Second Street, Perrysburg. A private interment will be held at Fort Meigs Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the WWII PT Boaters, PO Box 38070, Germantown, TN 38183-0070 or the Boy Scout Troop 198 in care of the First United Methodist Church.
