Carl W. Layman, 88, of Toledo, died Saturday, August 13 , 2011 at The Toledo Hospital surrounded by his family. A native of Toledo, he was born June 7, 1923 to the late Verna Otis and Augusta Frieda Roskeda Layman. He married Elaine Edna Rothacker on October 14, 1950 and she passed away on September 5, 1989 . A brother, Vern O. Layman and sister, Lois Quinn, also preceded him in death. A 1941 graduate of Macomber High School, Mr. Layman served in the United States Army during World War II. He installed and operated state-of-the-art communications equipment for General MacArthur while serving in the Philippines and New Guinea. Carl graduated from the University of Toledo in 1950 with a degree in Industrial Management and was employed as an industrial engineer with Libbey Owens Ford for more than 25 years, retiring in 1980. Carl was a lifelong member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and was a vintage car enthusiast. A brilliant engineer, he enjoyed solving problems and sharing his unique skills with his family. A man of few words, he appreciated his independence and enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his children, Barbara Tom Cousino, Dr. Robert Barb and James Shorty Gina Layman; and grandchildren, Kim and Katy Cousino, Robbie, Kristi, Molly, Andrew, Max, Margeaux and Mitchell Layman. Visitation will be held from 12-9 p.m., Wednesday in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 18, 2011. Burial will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio. The family would like to offer a special thanks to the critical care and trauma teams at The Toledo Hospital, especially nurses Denise, Bill and Mike.
