Burten E. Hathaway, 92, of Oak Harbor died Thursday, June 5, 2008 at his residence. He was born on May 8, 1916 in Port Clinton to Elmer and Anna Clausen Hathaway. On December 16, 1941 in Port Clinton he married Frances A. Petersen, and she preceded him in death on January 11, 2003. Burten worked for Matthews Boat Company from 1935-1940 and from 1965-1974, the Erie Army Depot from 1940-1965, and Camp Perry from 1974-1981. Burten enjoyed woodworking, bowling, and music. He was a former member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oak Harbor, eldest member of the 2002 Oak Harbor Bowling League, and was a drummer in the Dutch Band and The Twi-Lighters. Survivors include: daughters: Sandra Merrifield of Perrysburg, OH and Dawn Dave Pfeiffer of Graytown, OH; son: Gregory Hathaway of Oak Harbor; extended family: Tammy Shanahan and Dave Lehnhardt; 4 grandsons; 1 granddaughter; 3 great grandsons; 1 great granddaughter; and 1 step great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Memorial contributions may be given to the Hospice of Memorial Hospital, Fremont. Arrangements are being handled by the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Oak Harbor. The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Minick and Dr. Sean Callahan and staff for the care given to their father over the years along with great appreciation to the members of Hospice of Memorial Hospital in Fremont who attended to him in his final days. And, a very special thank you to friends and neighbors for their extraordinary assistance and support.
