Boyd Smith

Boyd “Smitty” Smith, 94, of Perrysburg, OH passed away January 10, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo. He was born on September 8, 1929, in Thomasville, NC to George and Bertha Smith.

Smitty, affectionately known by those closest to him as “Papa”, was a hard worker and began working at young age on a tobacco farm. Throughout his life he worked many jobs and had various entrepreneurial endeavors. The work he loved the most, however, was as an auto body repairman. He worked for Dave White Chevrolet for many years until his retirement, and even after that he continued working in his own shop until just 6 years ago. Boyd loved his country and was a proud Veteran of the Korean War.

Smitty was a loving grandfather and always worked to be there for his family, making annual trips back to North Carolina and Kentucky. He was always willing to help anyone, was a great storyteller with a silly sense of humor. He loved his dogs and had many during his long life. Smitty also enjoyed going to the casinos, watching NASCAR and Westerns, and eating Little Debbie sweets.

Boyd is survived by his sister, Raynell (†George) Crook; sister-in-law, Ruby Smith; sons, Rodney Smith and Rusty Smith; stepdaughters, Pam Contos and Paula Meeks; grandchildren, Jessika “Jesse” (Sam), Robert, Erin (Derek), Christie, Alexis (Mohammed), Winona, Wesley, and Zoey; great-granddaughter, Lenna Joy, and many other great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Anne; long-time companion, Joyce Baird; children, Morty Smith, Deana Meeks; granddaughter Baby Smith; and brother, Rayvon (Ruby) Smith.

Family and friends will be received from 4:00pm-7:00pm on Monday, January 15, 2024, at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, OH. On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, visitation will continue at the Funeral Home from 10:00am-11:00am with the funeral service beginning at 11:00am. Interment will immediately follow at Highland Memory Gardens, 8308 S. River Rd., Waterville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to The Toledo Area Humane Society, or to the Tunnel to Towers foundation to support veterans.
