Boyd O. Montgomery passed away peacefully on June 6, 2021 at the age of 98. He was born August 30, 1922, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Sarah Alice Erb and Truman Boyd Montgomery. He graduated from Warwood High School in West Virginia in 1940. Boyd grew up during the era referred to as the Greatest Generation whose members were impacted by the Great Depression and participated in World War II. Significantly, he passed away on the 77th anniversary of D-Day. Boyd married the love of his life, Katherine Horn, on September 19, 1942 in St. Clairsville, Ohio, two months before being called to active duty with the Army Air Corps (now the Air Force). Boyd served in World War II as a Pilot and as a B-25 Mitchell Flight Instructor in California and Arizona. He continued to serve in the Reserves after completing active duty. As a World War II Veteran, he participated in the Flag City Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2017 to visit the WWII Memorial in honor of his military service. Boyd started his career in the insurance business by representing Ohio State Life Insurance Company in Mansfield, Ohio, followed by Columbus, Ohio, before moving to Toledo, Ohio, as a General Agent in June of 1955. He founded the Boyd Montgomery Insurance Agency in 1957. He later purchased the Lumberman’s Agency incorporating it into his agency and then formed the Montgomery-Nichols Agency in Sylvania, Ohio. He is a partner in the Thormont Building in Downtown Sylvania. Boyd served as a Director of the former Sylvania Savings Bank, a Past President of the General Agents and Managers Association, a Past President of Sylvania Rotary, and a Board Member of the Coral Cay Apartments in Fort Lauderdale where he and his family frequently vacationed. He was active with the Boy Scouts and a long-time volunteer at Toledo Hospital. Boyd was a long-time member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Trustee. Most recently, Boyd was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church. He was a long-time member of Highland Meadows Golf Club, The Toledo Club, Sylvania Lodge #287, Scottish Rite, Zenobia Shrine and The Jesters. Boyd enjoyed playing golf, travelling, and spending his summer weekends at Devil’s Lake. Boyd is survived by his wife of almost 79 years, Katherine (Kay) Montgomery; their children, Boyd R. Montgomery (Sandra) of Sylvania, OH and Katherine Kranz (Dusty Tank) of Toledo, OH; their grandchildren Boyd R. Montgomery (Kimberly) of Apple Valley, MN, Lisa George (Derek) of Austin, TX, Jennifer Kranz (Troy) of Martin, OH, Jonathan Kranz (Jessica) and Benjamin Kranz (Tamara) both of Columbus, OH as well as 13 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Boyd is survived by his brother, Raymond Montgomery of Hampton, VA and his sister, June Shively of Orlando, FL. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Cynthia. His family will remember him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 from 4pm to 7pm at Walker Funeral Home on West Sylvania Avenue with a memorial service on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at 11am at Christ Presbyterian Church on Sylvania Avenue. A private burial will be held at Toledo Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Russell J.
