Bonita Christine Bonnie Heuerman

May 29, 1946 — November 15, 2013

Bonnie Heuerman, age 67, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on November 15, 2013 at her home in Sylvania Township. She was born on May 29, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio to George C. Collins and Evelyn Brown Collins. Bonnie graduated from Shaw High School and then went to The Ohio State University to pursue her dream of being a nurse. She graduated from Ohio State University in 1968 with a B. S. degree in nursing. She received a masters degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Toledo in 2005. It was at Ohio State in April, 1965, where she would meet her life-long love and best friend, Henry Hank N. Heuerman. They were married on July 6, 1968 in Cleveland. Bonnie was an instructor throughout most of her nursing career, beginning at the Riverside Hospital School of Nursing in Columbus. When she and Hank moved to Toledo in 1970 following Hanks graduation from law school, she began teaching at the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing. When that nursing school closed, Bonnie taught at St. Vincents Hospital School of Nursing and then at the University of Toledo. She took a break from nursing to spend more time with her children, Amy and Jeff while they were in school and did volunteer work at Davids House. When her children finished high school, she went back to teaching part-time at Owens Community College where she taught medical terminology and pharmacology, retiring in March 2013. In 2004, Bonnie was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. She approached this new chapter of her life with the same determination and positive attitude that she did with every challenge. She continued to teach and was determined that cancer was not going to control her life. Shortly after her diagnosis, she was introduced to The Victory Center and benefited greatly from the services and support that she received at the Center. She began volunteering at the Center and later became a board member for several years. The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Hayes and nurse practitioners Lita Smith and Megan Williams at the University of Michigans Comprehensive Cancer Center for the outstanding care and compassion that Bonnie received for over nine years. The family would also like to thank the wonderful people at Hospice of Northwest Ohio who provided care and comfort to Bonnie for the last three weeks. Bonnie is survived by her loving husband, Hank; children, Amy Keith Collignon and Jeffery Abby Heuerman, special grandchildren, Andrew Collignon, Harrison Heuerman and Layken Heuerman, and nephews, Thomas Eric Susanna Heuerman, Dillon Collins and Peter Heuerman. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Dr. Dale Richard Collins. Visitation will be on Monday, November 18, 2013 from 3:00 until 8:00 PM at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave, west of Corey Rd., where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 beginning at 10:30 AM. Burial will be immediately after the funeral at Toledo Memorial Park, 6382 Monroe Street. For those wishing to make a memorial contribution in honor of Bonnie, the family requests that you please consider The Victory Center of Toledo.
