Betty Ferris Nelson, age 84, of Waterville, Ohio passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at her residence. She was born on April 23, 1932 in San Pedro, California to Robert and Ruth (Axner) Ferris. Betty was a 1955 graduate of Bowling Green State University, where she received her degree in education. She first taught for 2 years at the Maumee Union School, then for 25 years in the Toledo Public Schools, and 12 years as a substitute teacher after retirement. Her father was a career submariner throughtout WWII and the family moved frequently to where he was stationed in places such as Honolulu, Kansas City, Cleveland, Key West, Panama and Connecticut. She was a youngster in Honolulu when the Japanese attached Pearl Harbor. Betty was a member of the Maumee Elks, where she was Lady Elk of the Year in 2001, and a member of the Wakeman Lodge, Roche de Boeuf, Chapter 163, where she was Worthy Matron in 1985. Betty is survived by her husband, Clifford; daughter, Jamie (Bruce) Laurie; son, Clifford III; sister, Ruth Murray; brothers-in-law, M. Dale Nelson and Donald Murray; sisters-in-law, Guelda Nelson and Amanda Nelson. She was also fortunate to have 14 nieces and nephews that she loved. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Mell Nelson. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, May 11, 2017 in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Waterville United Methodist Church.
