Betty Jane Laux

LAUX BETTY JANE Betty Jane Laux, 83, of Sylvania, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. Betty was born on June 4, 1925, in Toledo to Nicholas and Cecelia Kretin. She was a 1943 graduate of Waterville High School. Her career began in the offices of Owens-Illinois and she continued to serve as head teller at Sylvania Savings Bank. She also worked in the kitchen with her mother at their familys restaurant, Vans Steak House. She later worked at Sautters Food Center in Sylvania. Her proudest accomplishment was raising her five daughters. She loved to be with family and was always active in their lives. She served as a Brownie leader and as PTA secretary/treasurer at St. Joseph School. Betty was a talented seamstress and made dresses and clothes for her daughters. She was also known for her cooking and baking. Betty always made holidays very special for her family and friends. Betty and her husband, Jerry have been parishioners of St. Josephs Catholic Church in Sylvania since their wedding there in August of 1947. Betty is survived by her loving husband, Gerald Laux, with whom she would have celebrated 62 years of marriage this August; daughters, Marlene Damico, Dian Liber, Geraldine Mazur, Vicki Scanlon Ron, and Connie Feldstein Jay; grandchildren, who affectionately referred to Betty as both Mamie and Grandma, Jason Meyers, Joe Damico, Ashlee Assenmacher Joe, Erich Liber, Brad Liber Katie, Aaron Mazur Katelyn, Nicole Tuck Jeff, Lyndsey Mazur, Kelly Hampton, Sara Scanlon, Ronnie Scanlon Stephanie, Evan Feldstein and Tenley Feldstein; eight great-grandchildren and brother, Richard Van Sickle. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Cecelia Kretin, step-father, Floyd Van Sickle, and brother, Nicholas Kretin. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 17, from 2-8PM at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue where a scripture service will be held at 7PM followed by the Eulogy. Funeral services will begin with prayers at the funeral home on Monday, May 18, at 9:30AM followed by the Funeral Mass at 10AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5373 Main Street, Sylvania. Entombment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. The family will always be grateful to the doctors, nurses and aides at Hospice for their loving care. Tributes in Bettys memory may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
