Betty Ruth Arrowsmith Howald

Betty Arrowsmith Howald, age 98, died on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, in Birmingham, AL. She was born on January 16, 1921, in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, to First Lieutenant (later Brigadier General) John C. and Nell B. Arrowsmith. Betty graduated from Stephens College in 1940, and received her BA from the University of Kansas City (MO) in 1942. She served her country during World War II as a Pharmacist’s Mate from 1943 to 1946 in the WAVES, the women’s branch of the US Naval Reserve. She went on to graduate from the National College of Education. While living in Houston, TX, she met and then married Jeremiah “Jerry” M. Howald on October 24, 1953.They raised their five children on the family farm in Perrysburg, Ohio, and shared their love of music with everyone around them. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Nell, and is survived by her husband Jerry; her sister Jane Middleton of Morgan’s Point, TX; her children Arthur (Helen Zong), Ruth (Scott Montgomery), John (Darlene), Carl and Martha (Chaz) Higgs; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2019 with a hymn sing at 10:00 a.m., followed by visitation, at Riverchase United Methodist Church, 1953 Old Montgomery Hwy, Hoover, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Perrysburg, Ohio, or to Riverchase UMC in Hoover, AL.
