Betty B. (Britten) Heslup, 89, passed away Wednesday September 14, 2011. A lifelong resident of Perrysburg, Betty had been a resident of Kingston Residence of Perrysburg the past three years. She was born on July 5, 1922 to Ralph T. and Bertha (Schaller) Britten at the family farmhouse at Britten’s Turkey Farm. Betty married Robert J. Heslup on September 23, 1945, two weeks after his return from service during WWII. Swing dancers and lovers of the big band sound, Betty and Bob spent many years dancing their Saturday nights away at D.C. Ranch in Perrysburg. Betty graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1939, the year of the historic World’s Fair in New York City, the destination of her senior class trip. After that, Betty attended Bowling Green State Teacher’s College and after receiving her certificate, began teaching at Glenwood Elementary School, a Perrysburg school at the time. After a sixteen year teaching hiatus in order to stay at home with her three children, Betty returned to B.G.S.U. and earned her Bachelors Degree in Education, and returned to teaching first and second graders at Elm Street (later named Toth) Elementary, marking a 25 year teaching career in total. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Perrysburg. An avid sewer and quilter, she belonged to a local sewing club that met for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are her children Scott M. (Karen) Heslup, daughter Shelly A. (Richard) Fitzhugh of O’Fallon, IL, and John R. (Susan) Heslup of Atlanta, GA, grandchildren Carrie Fitzhugh, Jeremy Heslup, Alison Heslup and Ian Heslup. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, grandson John Fitzhugh, sister Arthella Liebherr and brother Richard Britten.
