Betty J. Caster

March 20, 1922 — May 22, 2013

Betty J. Caster faithfully completed her earthly journey on May 22, 2013, and has moved to her final and best home. She died peacefully at Hospice of NW Ohios Perrysburg facility. Betty was born March 20, 1922 to Louis and Edna Mallendick. She was one of six children, five girls and a boy. All her siblings, except her youngest sister, preceded her in death: Margaret Steuer Cliff, Jean Kaemming Walter, Elaine Holmes, and Carlton Louis Mallendick. Mary Lou Willmarth of Bowling Green is now the only remaining Mallendick child and will carry on the family legacy very capably. Betty was married to John E. Caster for 48 years, until his death in 1991. They had four children: David Jon, Diane Jayne, Douglas James, and Carol Diane. Diane died at age 3 in 1952; David died in 2012. Doug lives in Findlay with his wife, Norma. Carol lives in Rhode Island with her husband, Evan, and their two boys, Evanjohn and Peter. Bettys granddaughter Davids daughter, Michele Ann Holan and her husband, Doug, live in Toledo. Her four children are an important part of the future of the Caster family: David Michael, Aaron, Megan and Caitlyn. Betty also has two step grandchildren: Wayne Gilleo Dori, Wentzville MO and Bob Caster Pattie, Longmont CO. Betty graduated from DeVilbiss High School and worked as a secretary for the Toledo Board of Education for over 20 years, retiring in 1983. She was raised on Hoiles Ave near Pilgrim Church where she was a very active member. She served on the Board of Deacons, in Womens Circle, and on the Crisis Committee. She could often be found in the kitchen preparing church dinners as part of the dedicated crew. In later years, Betty appreciated the ministry of the Sylvania UCC church. Bettys gentle spirit and quick smile, for which she was well known, were with her to the end. Her family wishes to express gratitude to the caring community of OakLeaf Village where Betty lived for the last seven years; to Hospice of Northwest Ohio; and to Jan Sharp, faithful caregiver. Visiting hours and funeral will be held at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave, on Saturday, May 25, from 10-12:00. Funeral immediately following at 12:00. Please join us at OakLeaf Village, 4220 N Holland Sylvania Ave, immediately following the funeral about 1:00 for a light meal in celebration of Bettys life. For those unable to come on Saturday, there are also visiting hours on Friday, May 24, from 4:00-8:00 PM. Memorial contributions to the charity of your choice.
