Betty Jane Carman, 85, known by many as Miss Betty or Mother, of Genoa, Ohio and formerly of Graytown, Ohio, died Friday, November 5, 2010 in the Genoa Retirement Village. Betty was born in Burton, Ohio on July 28, 1925 to Reginald and Mabel Ann Owen Stallard. She married Joseph W. Martikan and he preceded her in death April of 1963. Betty later married Paul E. Carman in Martin, Ohio, in 1965, and he also preceded her in death in April of 1987. Betty spent much of her life working in the restaurant business and was known for her famous potato salad. For several years, until 1979, she owned and operated the former Mardys in Graytown. She had also worked at the former Green Derby and Hi-Flash until her retirement in 1998. Betty was very active and enjoyed polka dancing, creating beautiful hooked rugs, and hosting poker parties. Her most cherished pastime was taking care of her family. Betty had also been an Apprentice Seaman in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Betty is survived by her sons, Nolan Judy Carman, Timothy Yvette Carman, Theodore Amy Carman, Timothy Amy Martikan, Michael Carman, John Chuck Jane Carman, daughters, Becky Kevin Swan, Betty Jane Hanthorn, Patricia Zunk, Susan Roger Radsick, and Paula Jean Dave Balatincz. Also surviving are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sister, Dorothy Whelpley, and brother, Rags Lois Stallard. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and sister Jean Marsh. A funeral service for Betty will be conducted at 11 AM, on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home Crematory, 501 West St. Genoa. Interment will follow in the Elliston Cemetery, Elliston, OH. Visitation will be in the funeral home from 2-8 PM, Monday, November 8, 2010.
