Betty Ann Burgess, age 89, passed away at the Kingston Care Center of Sylvania on January 5, 2017 after a long period of dementia. She was born in 1927 in Weston, Ohio to Vera and Frank Harrington of Maumee. Betty graduated from Maumee High School in 1945 and received a degree in Elementary Education from Bowling Green State University. She taught first grade for thirty-one years at Fort Miami School in Maumee, Ohio, retiring in 1981. Betty married Raymond Burgess in 1951 by her husbands step-father, Rev. Lynn Young. They enjoyed 65 wonderful years together. Betty attended Calvary Church, was a member of the Ohio and Maumee Education Associations, the Brandywine Country Club, the Toledo Zoo and the Stranahan Lecture, Music and Theater Series. Both Betty and Ray enjoyed traveling and being near the water, where they shared many trips to Bermuda, Hawaii and many cruises. Annual visits to Conrads White Birch Lodge near Traverse City were always highlights for them. Betty especially enjoyed her home, flower gardens, Christmas decorating, cookie baking, cross stitching, stamping and window displays at the Elegant Stamp. Surviving Betty is her husband, Raymond; brother-in-law, Jim (Sandy) Burgess; sisters-in-law, Judy Thomas and Marge Young and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Dan Harrington and brothers-in-law, Jack Young and Dale Thomas. Special thanks to Ray and Carole Horstman and the Conrad family for keeping Betty and Ray in their hearts through the years. The family also would like to thank the many wonderful caregivers at Kingston and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the compassionate care they gave Betty. Family and friends may visit from 3-8 pm on Monday, January 9, 2017 at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday January 10, 2017 in the funeral home with Pastor Sue Bucher officiating. Interment will be in Fort Meigs Cemetery, Perrysburg, Ohio.
