Benjamin Louis Vary Harris, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2024, at the age of 94. He was born on September 12, 1930, in Toledo, OH, the son of Raymond and Ruth Vary Harris. Ben lived a life defined by faith, generosity, and love for his family and country.
On December 24, 1951, Benjamin married the love of his life, Rose (Case), and they celebrated 68 years together. Ben's devotion to his children was evident in the lessons he imparted to them, from the importance of hard work and integrity to honoring the Lord with all he had and giving to those in need. He was immensely proud of his family.
Ben answered the call to serve his country during the Korean War, where he proudly served in the Army as a lineman. Returning he worked for Toledo Edison as a lineman, dispatcher, and foreman, until his retirement in 1990.
As a grandfather, Ben’s legacy grew even stronger, and he cherished his time with his grandchildren. Papa and Nana, as they were known to the grandkids, would bring out bags and bags of Hostess treats to which the kids always looked forward. He also showed love for his 18 great-grandchildren by making sure they were supplied with candy every time they came to visit. He also enjoyed frequent visits from the granddogs – though they didn’t get any candy.
Ben is survived by his children, James (Dianne) Harris, Jeanne (Tim) Davies, his grandchildren: Jennifer (Matthew) Widmer, Sarah Davies, Tim (Amanda) Davies, Rebekah (Jacob) Schwab, and Benjamin (Stephanie) Davies, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and beloved wife, Rose.
A graveside service to celebrate Ben’s life and his homecoming to the Lord will be held at Toledo Memorial Park on November 22, 2024, at 11am. Following the service, a luncheon for remembrance and fellowship will be held at Genoa Christian Church, 415 Main St. in Genoa, Ohio. The family invites all who knew and loved Ben to join them in honoring his memory, his service, and his legacy of faith and love. Those who are unable to attend the graveside service are invited to join the celebration at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Community Christian Academy Scholarship Fund in Ben’s memory, continuing his spirit of generosity and service to others.
Ben will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and perseverance, and his legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those who were blessed by his example.
