Barbara J. Petersen Bailey

On Friday, August 3, Barbara Bailey passed away peacefully at her home with her children at her side. She had spent seven years dealing with Neuro-Endocrine cancer. Barbara was born on March 9, 1931 to Frances and Stensen Petersen of Port Clinton. She graduated from PCHC class of 1949, and went on to major in Music and Education at Ohio State University, where she was also a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. In 1953 she married Benjamin Bailey of Salem, OH. She spent 20 years as an Air Force Wife, setting up her household and raising her family in nine locations around the country and Puerto Rico. In many of her postings she taught school and was always involved in the community and social activities of the Officers Wives Clubs. She was also interested in genealogy and spent time seeking out and organizing information on her childrens ancestry. After military retirement, Barbara returned to Port Clinton. She taught flute lessons and played organ for St. Pauls Lutheran Church. She taught Adult Basic Education and recorded books for the blind. She was Activities and Social Services director at Edgewood Manor Nursing Center for 12 years until her retirement. Later she served as the Curator for the Ottawa County Museum. She was active in many local organizations and clubs including the Genealogy Society, Antiquarians, 88 Circle, Port Clinton Artists Club, Playmakers Theater and several weekly bridge clubs. She traveled around the country to visit family and visited Europe several times. She is survived by her children - Kristen Bailey Michael Abney of Port Clinton, Eric Teri Bailey of Dallas, TX, and Gretchen Bailey Brian Zydiak of Culver City, CA; grandchildren Charlotte Abney of Washington DC, Kevin Abney of Brooklyn, NY, Christopher, Jonathan, Michael and Erica Bailey of Dallas, TX, Per and Cameron Bailey-Zydiak of Culver City, CA. Her brother, Lowell Elaine Petersen of Port Clinton and her Aunt Eva Jean Vollmer Petersen of Catawba Island also survive Barbara donated her body to the UT Medical Center in order to advance the knowledge of Neuro Endocrine cancer. The Family wishes to thank Stein Hospice for their support and assistance during Barbaras last six months. The family will have calling hours on Saturday, August 18 from 1 - 7 pm at her home, 715 E Second St. in Port Clinton. In lieu of flowers, Barbara requested that donations be made to the Ottawa County Historical Museum at PO Box 845, Port Clinton, OH 43452.
