Dr. Ayyaswamy Thambuswamy, esteemed Toledo surgeon dies at 83. Dr. Swamy, as his colleagues referred to him, was a highly regarded surgeon for more than 45 years, performing thousands of operations at St. Charles and other hospitals in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Thambuswamy was born and raised in Chennai, India, graduated from Madras Medical College, and was a successful practicing surgeon in Chennai prior to coming to the United States. After completing his general surgery residency again at Maumee Valley Hospital, currently University of Toledo Medical School, he began practicing at Riverside Hospital and continued at St. Charles Hospital. He loved being a surgeon and helping his patients, said his wife of 56 years. Although surgery was his primary role, he took care of other medical problems, as well, including treating patients for an assortment of ailments, illnesses and injuries. He also made house calls when the situation warranted. He was a compassionate physician, always putting the needs of his patients first. If a patient called he would call that patient back before the day was over, said one of his office assistants. Other than medicine, he was an avid painter, voracious reader, and devotee of the Hindu Temple. He spent countless hours painting and donated many of his paintings to charity. He is survived by his wife; five children; two sons-in-law, and four grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 25, 2016, at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.), Toledo, OH 43623, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
