August Donald Gildemeister, Sr.

Gildemeister August Donald August Donald Gildemeister, Sr. passed away October 16, 2008. A lifelong Toledo resident, he was born June 19, 1920 to parents August and Marie Gildemeister. He was preceded in death by the former Margaret Abbey, his wife of 59 years. Don was a 1938 graduate of DeVillbis High School. He graduated from Case Institute of Technology in 1942, earning a degree in Metallurgical engineering. The following year he enlisted in the United States Navy, boarding the U.S.S. Texas where he served until the end of WWII, discharging as a 2nd Lieutenant. His business career was spent with the Doehler-Jarvis Co. He retired in 1985 as General Sales Manager. He continued to consult with the company for the next decade. Don was an accomplished amateur golfer. He was a member of the Inverness Club for 53 years, winning the club championship in 1947 and 1967. His many amateur competitions included the 1957 Ohio Amateur Championship where he was paired with a pre-emergent Arnold Palmer. Mr. Gildemeister is survived by sons, A. Donald, Jr. Carole of Toledo, Gary Pat of Burlington, VT, and daughter, Melissa King Douglas, Sr. of Chagrin Falls, OH; grandchildren, Gretchen Grana, Sarah Gerkin; Eric, Carl, and Franz Gildemeister; Douglas, Jr. and Abbey King; and 6 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his beloved cousin, Marianne Hewlett. Visitation will be from 3-7:00pm on Friday, October 31, 2008 at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey Rd. where funeral services will be at 12 noon on Saturday, November 1st.
