Arthur David Soderberg

Arthur David Soderberg, 91, of Lakeside-Marblehead, OH, passed away, Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at his residence. Art was born on March 07, 1924 in Seattle, WA, the son of Wallace and Rose (Olsen) Soderberg. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Washington and also attended Yale University and Reed College. Art was a navigator and did search and rescue in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. He received the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. On March 20, 1948, he married Dorothy Jayne Sandberg and she preceded him in death on March 26, 1997. Art worked as a plant manager for U.S. Gypsum and served in various managerial positions. During his career with USG he worked in plants in Montana, Indiana, Gypsum, OH, Nashville, TN, and Allen Park, MI. He ended his career in Chicago and retired after more than 40 years. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Port Clinton, OH, where he served on various committees and taught Sunday school. Most recently, he was a member of Lakeside United Methodist Church and served on several committees at Otterbein North Shore Retirement Center. He had played semi pro baseball, was a Boy Scout leader and coached little league baseball. Art was a member of the American Legion Post #113, a life member of the Elk’s Lodge #1718, a member and past president of the Port Clinton Kiwanis Club, and a former member of the Port Clinton Yacht Club and the Catawba Island Club. Art was an avid golfer and enjoyed swimming, walking and gardening. A member of “the Greatest Generation.” Art was a genuinely nice guy and a gentleman. He served as a role model for patience, perseverance and optimism. Art will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. Survivors include: Daughter: Janet (Thomas Trengove) Soderberg of New York City, NY; Sons: David (Patty) Soderberg of Port Clinton, Mark (Leslie) Soderberg of Cranberry Twp, PA and Tom Soderberg of Lakeside; Grandchildren: Ben, Josh (Kim), Annie (John) Phillippe, Daniel (Jenni), Patrick (Stephanie Prater), Allison; Great-Grandchildren: Wyatt, Grady, James Arthur, Olivia and Annabelle and Niece: Patricia Soderberg of Tacoma, WA. Art was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother: Wally Soderberg. Visitation will be 2-4 & 6-8PM, Friday, April 24, 2015, in the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Clinton, OH. Funeral Service will be conducted by Pastor Bruce Batchelor-Glader at 10:30AM, Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 135 Adams St., Port Clinton, OH 43452. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton, OH. Memorial donations in memory of Art may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church or Stein Hospice.
