Arthur M. Sobczak passed away at his home in Perrysburg on October 31, 2022 after a brief illness. Art used his talents and knowledge to help others throughout his life. He could always be counted on to lend a hand, have a needed tool, or supply detailed instructions for how to do something.
Art was born in Toledo to John F. and Frances G. (Raczkowski) Sobczak on October 29, 1930, the youngest of six children. After his graduation from Central Catholic High School in 1949, Art began his 40 year career with the Toledo Edison Company, working his way up from the mailroom to an underground line supervisor. He was called to active duty in the Army during the Korean Conflict and took a leave from the company for 2 years, serving in an artillery unit in Korea. He was discharged from the army as a sergeant.
Art married his sweetheart, Barbara (Rakosik) in 1954 and they spent 68 years together supporting one another “in sickness and in health.” He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and friends, traveling, gardening, and serving God and his community.
As a teenager, Art caddied at Inverness Golf Club and had the privilege of caddying for Ben Hogan during one of his tournament wins. He continued his love of golf as an adult and was very proud of his hole-in-one at the Highland Meadows Golf Club in 2000.
Art was active in the Perrysburg American Legion Post #28 and VFW Post #6170. He participated in the Military Honor Guard for funerals and local high school football games and was able to visit Washington D.C. as part of the Honor Flight program. He also was a life member of the St. Rose Catholic Church Knights of Columbus and served at funeral masses at the church for 30 years.
Art will be greatly missed by his wife, Barbara (Rakosik); children, Marilyn (Glenn) Graybill, Theresa (Matthew) O’Donnell, and Michael (Kathryn) Sobczak; grandchildren, Sean (Elizabeth) O’Donnell, Holly Sobczak, Timothy O’Donnell, and Justin (Madison) Sobczak; step-grandchildren, Kris (Ed) Edgerton and Warren (Debbie) Graybill, 4 step great-grandchildren and 8 step great-great -grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 2, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church, 215 E. Front Street, Perrysburg, Ohio. Visitation with the family will be at the church at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in St. Rose Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral Home, Perrysburg (419-874-3133). The family suggests memorial contributions me be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
