Arthur Art Maerlender, 92, of Toledo lost his battle to Alzheimers on March 2, 2011. Art was born on October 17, 1918 in Hackensack, New Jersey to Henry Carl and Charlottte Reincke Maerlender. He lost his father at a young age. Arts two uncles and grandmother played a large role in his upbringing. After graduating from Mount Clair Academy in New Jersey, he served in the U.S. Army during W.W.II in an anti-aircraft artillery battalion in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and became a Park Ranger in Virginia. Later, Art was employed as a small tool buyer for Sears Roebuck in Chicago for 31 years. After retirement, he moved to Gulf Shores, Alabama where he was involved in real estate sales and later as a travel agent and cruise specialist. He traveled worldwide and retired in 2004. Art was a life time member of the New York City American Legion Post. While in Gulf Shores, he was a Lay Eucharistic Minister of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Bon Secour, Alabama. He also served on the vestry for many years. He was a past board member of Oyster Bay Village, active in the Community Theater and an avid tennis player. Most recently he attended St. Andrews Episcopal Church in West Toledo. Art was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Hopkins in 1991. Two sons from that union survive; Carl Hopkins of Colorado and Dr. Arthur Susan Carl, Jr. of New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Jessamym Ressler-Maerlender, Christin, Michael and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his wife of 17 years, Mary Ann Harvey-Prichard of Toledo; his step-daughters, Nancy Phil Pietras, Jane Joe Fragomeni and Catherine Lynn Butterworth. Family will receive friends from 2:00 to 2:30 on Sunday, March 6, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 2770 W. Central Ave. where a memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm. Arrangements by Walker Funeral Home and Crematory, 419-841-2422. Interment will be at St. Peters Episcopal Church Cemetery in Bon Secour, Alabama. In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Rd., Perrysburg, OH 43551 or St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
