Anna (Anne) Freeland (nee Esch), still known to some of her kin as “Elsie,” died peacefully in Flower Hospital hospice at the age of 95 on Wednesday evening, 7 February 2018. Anna immigrated to the United States with her German mother at the age of six and, with the exception of her service in the U.S. Navy as a pharmacist mate during World War II, spent her entire life in Toledo, Ohio. Shortly after the war, she began her lifelong marriage to Paul Freeland (deceased 2002). Anne raised her family of five boys in the St. Agnes parish, where she was an active member, and during their later years Anne and Paul relocated to St. Clement’s parish, where Anne served for many years as receptionist, and president of its St. Vincent de Paul Society. She spent her last years at West Park Place retirement community, where she made many friends. Anne was an avid reader who loved discussing her latest literary discoveries. She enjoyed playing bridge, listening to classical music, was a consummate cook and baker, and throughout her life reserved time for charitable endeavors. She is survived by four of her children, Kenneth, Donald (Martha), Michael and John (Maureen), as well as by her two granddaughters, Lauren and Meagan, from her deceased son Robert (Karen). Memorial service will be held at St. Clement’s Catholic Church, 3030 Tremainsville Rd., Toledo, Ohio, 43613, on Tuesday February 13. Visitation at 9:00 am, funeral Mass at 10:00 am, luncheon reception at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are requested to be sent to the St. Clement’s Parish chapter of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Arrangements by Walker Funeral Home (419-841-2422).
