Ann Rose MacMillan, of Toledo, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, December 5, 2024. Born in Boston, MA, to Ernest and Sarah (Loftus) Ratto, Ann was a lifelong learner and dedicated educator. She earned her undergraduate degree from Boston University (Sargent College) and her master’s degree from the University of Toledo.
Ann was married to the love of her life, Donald MacMillan, for over 51 years until his passing. Their loving marriage was a testament to their deep bond and mutual respect.
Ann's career in education spanned many roles, reflecting her passion for teaching and learning. She taught physical education and kindergarten, and later served as an evaluator and administrator at the Jefferson Center in the Toledo Public Schools. Ann also brought joy to many children as "Miss Ann" on local television broadcasts of Romper Room for four years. She was an active member of the Wildwood Athletic Club for over 30 years.
Ann will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She had a genuine interest in everyone's stories and activities, always eager to learn more about the people she loved. Despite living in Toledo, Ann remained a New Englander at heart throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Sarah Ratto; her husband, Donald MacMillan; her nephew, Edward Barron; and her son-in-law, Brad Sprague. Ann is survived by her siblings, Louise Barron, Ernie Ratto, and Ruth Henderson; her children, Richard (Laura) MacMillan and Jeanne Sprague; her grandchildren, Jim (Josh), Amy (Johnny), Kelly, Eric (Molly) Sprague, Scott Sprague, Carolyn Grogan, and Brian (Marianna) Sprague; and her great-grandchildren, Cameron, Leo, Fallon, and Mason Sprague, and Aaron and Molly Grogan. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Ann's life will be held in February. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in her memory to the Jesuits of New York, 39 East 83rd Street, New York, NY 10028.
Ann's legacy of love, learning, and dedication to her family and community will be cherished by all who knew her.
