Anicia Dr. Mathews

Anicia Zambrano Mathews, MD, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 9, 2017, at the age of 90 years old stricken with Alzheimer’s disease. She was a respected physician, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who took pride in caring for others as a Physician. She loved to fish, travel and work in her garden. Anicia was born in Manila, Philippines on December 30, 1926, the daughter of Augustine and Maria (Perez) Zambrano. While coming from a family of 9 siblings, including herself, she strived to pursue her career as a medical doctor. She came to the United States in 1955 to finish her residency at St. Mary’s Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah, where she met her husband Robert Harlan Mathews. They were married in San Diego, California February 1956. As well as a respected Physician, Anicia was the First Foreign Female Family Practice Physician of Toledo, OH, where she served on the Medical Staff of Riverside Hospital and St. Charles Hospital. As well as her own private practices in Oregon, Ohio and also Woodville, Ohio. Surviving are her children, Eileen Mathews, James Mathews, Robert Mathews (spouse Tina Mathews) and Kimberly Anne Mathews Baerlin (spouse David L. Baerlin). Her grandchildren as follows, Jennifer Wilson, Mark Hagedorn, Dr. Kristina Mathews Acosta, Robert Mathews Jr., Seth Baerlin, Gage Baerlin, Devin Baerlin, Reese Baerlin and Great Grandchildren, William, Skylar and Christopher Wilson, Evelyn, Silas, Triton and Lennon Baerlin. Memorial Visitation will take place at Hoeflinger-Shank Funeral Home, 3500 Navarre Ave., Oregon, OH on Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 10:00 am until the start of her service at 11:30 am.
