Angelica Bernadette Fenton, known as Lieke, age 64, of Toledo, OH passed away peacefully on March 31, 2022, after battling illness. She was born on December 15, 1957, in Jakarta, Indonesia to Yan and Christine (Lim) Liauw where she was raised alongside her two brothers before her family immigrated to Lorain, OH in 1970.
Lieke was a graduate of Lorain Catholic High School and the University of Toledo and attended Medical College of Ohio and Medical University of Ohio at Toledo where she earned a Master’s Degree in Human Donation Science. She had a decades-long career in the medical profession that included Cytogenetics Specialist at University of Michigan Health System, Cytogenetics Specialist at University of Toledo, and Donation Coordination Specialist for the last 20 years at Gift of Life Michigan. She coached tennis and was the manager at Westowne Tennis Club where she shared her passion for tennis to people of all ages. Among her leadership roles was serving on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Ohio Tennis Association.
Lieke was an incredibly selfless woman who sacrificed much of herself to be there for others, especially her loved ones. She was her mother’s caretaker for four years until her passing in 2005. Her family describes Lieke as “the matriarch” who loved everyone and kept them in order. While she was tremendously generous, caring, motivating, and smart, she would not hesitate to tell you how it was and her friends and family respected her for it. She was a food connoisseur, accomplished cook, took great pleasure in building and maintaining friendships, socially collaborative, and was often generous to a fault. She was an ardent traveler who savored the many trips she took over the years.
Family was of utmost importance to Lieke. She relished her time with husband Joe and the Fenton family who lovingly embraced her into the fold. Following the death of her mother and father she ascended to the matriarch position which included a loving and constant eye over her brothers and a beloved passion for the wellbeing and future of her nieces. For the last eight years Lieke has shared her life with constant companion Dirk Broersma who has brought immeasurable joy to her life.
Lieke is survived by her significant other, Dirk Broersma; brothers, Andreas (Kate) Liauw, Raimund (Jeff Horn) Liauw; nieces, Andie, Emmie, Maddie, and Gracie Liauw; and many friends and family members around the world. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joseph Fenton.
